CURRICULUM AT TREFFOS

At Treffos, our curriculum evolves alongside our learners, with pupil voice playing a significant role in shaping intended outcomes. By actively involving learners in their educational journey, we foster greater engagement, encourage a sense of ownership over learning, and promote positive well-being.

The Treffos Values are at the heart of our curriculum and school community. They guide learners in developing positive attitudes towards learning, building respectful relationships, and becoming responsible, compassionate individuals. By embedding these values throughout daily school life, we support children in making informed choices, showing empathy towards others, and contributing positively to their community. Together, pupil voice and the Treffos Values help to create a nurturing environment in which every learner can thrive and achieve their full potential.

Well-being is central to our curriculum at Treffos, ensuring that every learner feels supported and is equipped to develop resilience and adaptability when faced with challenges. Our focus on well-being aims to enhance each individual's self-esteem, support children in understanding and managing their emotions, and deepen their awareness of the world around them. We strive to create a learning environment where children feel safe, comfortable, and happy, while encouraging them to express their thoughts and feelings with confidence.

At the beginning of each term, children are welcomed back to school with a range of well-being activities designed to support both their mental and physical health. These activities may include opportunities for discussion and reflection, scenario-based learning through reading or video, breathing and relaxation techniques, and yoga sessions. Well-being remains a key focus throughout the term, with regular planned activities and daily emotional check-ins within each classroom to promote positive mental health and ensure that every child feels supported.

The Curriculum for Wales is implemented across primary schools throughout Wales. At Treffos, we are committed to supporting our learners in achieving the four purposes of the curriculum, providing a broad, balanced, and inclusive educational experience that meets the needs of every individual.

The curriculum at Treffos is delivered through the six Areas of Learning and Experience, providing learners with a broad, balanced, and engaging educational experience. Literacy, numeracy, and digital competence are embedded across all areas of learning, enabling children to develop and apply these essential skills in meaningful and authentic contexts. This integrated approach supports learners in making connections across the curriculum and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for lifelong learning.

At Treffos, Outdoor Learning is an integral part of our curriculum, providing meaningful opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom. Through engaging with the natural environment, learners develop essential problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, while also enhancing their physical and emotional well-being. Our school grounds offer a safe and stimulating environment where children can explore, investigate, and take managed risks, fostering independence, resilience, and curiosity. Regular access to outdoor learning experiences helps to build self-esteem, strengthen self-confidence, and encourage effective collaboration, enabling learners to develop a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

Throughout the year, children will continue to develop and refine a range of essential skills across the curriculum. These include reading, comprehension, handwriting, and spelling, with learning tailored to each child's individual stage of development and ability. Learners will also strengthen their numeracy skills, including number fluency, times tables, reasoning, and problem-solving. These skills are taught explicitly during mathematics lessons and are regularly applied across the wider curriculum, enabling children to make meaningful connections in their learning and build confidence in using their skills in a variety of contexts.

This flexible approach ensures that learning remains meaningful, relevant, and responsive to the needs of our learners.

The school uses an exciting variety of topics to plan learning activities for each of the six areas of learning experiences in the Curriculum for Wales...
— Estyn (2022)
Staff support is highly effective and patiently applied. Pupils are allowed to first problem solve before staff step in to support. As a result, nearly all pupils develop their resilience and independence rapidly over time. Purposefully planned opportunities support many pupils to further develop their independence and self-organisation. This is equally evident in classrooms, where pupils organise their resources, equipment and working area without direction, and during outdoor learning where pupils solve problems in authentic contexts.
For example, older pupils use ropes and landscape to create an obstacle course.
